Halfway Out the Door

Well, yesterday was my penultimate Kids' Group experience. A lot is changing before my very eyes. We have a new employee from the Crisis Center that will be attending to help now, instead of just the volunteers. It hasn't been that way in a long time. The group is also in the process of asking for donations since we no longer have funding. Even though I was helping with a nonprofit, I found myself taking for granted the funding that we had received previously until we lost it. I think the Kids' Group will be a very different experience for future volunteers.
We had a slightly larger group this week than last time. It was good, but also crazy. We had kids ranging from toddlers to high school students. Unfortunately, that made things kind of hectic, and at times, the kids did not get along. However, overall the activity went well.
I planned this one: paper snowflakes. Since we haven't had any snow here in Cedar, we thought we would have the kids make their own. It was good because snowflakes are easy to make, but can be made more complex for older people. The littlest of the bunch couldn't participate, but sometimes the littlest ones are the easiest to entertain in other ways.
It was interesting contemplating how much I am going to miss these kids. Some of them are downright rude. They have no filter. Some are violent. Some are reclusive and quiet. Some make me want to cry for them, some because of them. But I'm going to miss every single one of them. Hanging out with them is such a great experience. I would recommend that everyone volunteer with kids at some point in their lives.
